TOPEST
Greece -
The general objective for developing a Training tOolkit for the sustainable use of PESTicides (TOPEST) in line with measures set by the Directive 2009/128/EC (and the accordingly set up Greek National Plan for the Sustainable Use of Pesticides) is to familiarize Greek farmers with the potential risks of pesticide use to human health and the environment in order to apply the appropriate measures to reduce those risks. The TOPEST service will assist them in preparing for the official tests organized by the national authority designated to grant the certificate of the sustainable use of pesticides (the Plant Protection Direction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food). It should also be mentioned that training is not a prerequisite to granting the certificate. Hence, candidates are responsible for their training and the offer of training tools, especially those available on the Internet, is essential to help them in case they choose to prepare by themselves. The specific objective of TOPEST is to design training modules-courses of both theoretical and practical parts comprised of questionnaires codifying both the requirements of the Directive (and the accordingly set up Greek National Plan for the Sustainable Use of Pesticides) and the existing mandatory requirements on pesticides stipulated by the mechanism of cross-compliance. By using the proposed tool, the farmer is going to be able to (1) test his knowledge on the subject of the sustainable use of pesticides (2) prepare for the official tests in order to obtain the mandatory certification and (3) link between the requirements of the Directive and the existing mechanism of cross-compliance.
